SkyNet 09-25-2001, 08:24 PM To exit vi or vim it's :q To exit emacs it's C-x C-c (C=CTRL) You really should read the man page or some documentation on using those editors. Dark Ninja 09-25-2001, 08:27 PM First off, why can't you install the GUI? Secondly, I haven't ever run emacs in text format, so I can't help you there. Third, vi has two modes. Append mode (which is where you type and stuff. You get into this mode by typing 'a' once you get into vi) and Command mode (which you are automatically put into when you enter vi or you can get to from append mode by hitting [ESC]). To quit vi, you must be in COMMAND mode. In command mode, type the following :q - or - if you edited a file and want to save it first :w (you'll be asked to enter a place to save) :q If you just want to quit and not save what you just did, type :q! There you go. Hope that helps. There are tutorials online for both vi and emacs, so you can read up about them there. Use Google. It's your friend. Dark Ninja psybintea 09-25-2001, 09:11 PM i didn't install a GUI because GUI's are for the weak. j/k MandK_10 09-25-2001, 10:05 PM You obviously have access to the internet, there are some really good tutorials and HowTo's on Vi and Emacs out there. nopri 09-25-2001, 10:25 PM hello if you feel hard to use vim or emacs, may be for first you can use pico, if you installed pine. GUI sometimes needed for amusement :) psybintea 09-25-2001, 11:29 PM how do i make a guest user? Dark Ninja 09-25-2001, 11:58 PM I had something else in this spot, but I have decided to change it on the fact that I hate when people flame each other. On the other hand - I'm still sticking with the same point of my original message. The question you just asked (about adding a user) is a very basic question that you should have found on your own before you came to this board. Do that. Go buy a book on Linux or Unix and read it. And then pracitce it. It's the best way to learn. If you ask too many dumb questions here, people will not want to answer you when you ask a good question. Slackmonster 09-26-2001, 01:17 AM I might have missed this in a previous post, but just wanted to make sure you know this. In vi, before you hit the ":q" to exit, make sure you hit the escape key to get out of insert mode. Microsoft Tech Support... hehehe :) Dark Ninja 09-26-2001, 01:44 AM But, i must say, you're starting to sound like microsoft tech support. True, true...point taken. But I must say, with all the easy-to-answer questions you are asking, you are starting to sound like the idiotic people who contact Microsoft Tech Support. Don't flame me for something that you haven't done. And, I sound nothing like Microsoft Tech Support. I lost my Indian dialect years ago. ;) Seriously, though. You have to read and practice. That's how you become good at Linux. We aren't here to be your little tech support. You have to put in the work yourself to get anything out of it. Dark Ninja justlinux.com
