Hello,

well , after like 5 minutes of work , KDE freezes completely :( ... and I don't have anything bad running even :( ... have running XChat and AIM ... what can be a problem ?

and what's the safe way to get out of the freeze, because I always had to cold restart, and it happenned 3 times already

thanks

hmmm... odd. Try this, boot up kde, and SIT there, don't do anything. just wait. See if it freezes.

And for the second part of your question. alt-f1 will keep X open but put you into a console. and alt-backspace will kill X (you might need to also press control).

Anyways, the next time it crahes, go back to console and run top. See if anything is using 100% of the cpu, or any other odd things. Also, how did you install KDE? did you use the beta version?

If it's consistantly crashing and ctrl-alt-backspace *doesn't* take you out of X then try running your computer with the case off and make sure you're not overclocking anything and see if it still happens. This tests to see if anything is overheating and is quite commonly the case. Another test is if you have another computer handy try pinging the crashed computer, if you receive pings then it's likely the video card itself, drivers or overheating. If you do receive pings then you can telnet in and do a proper shutdown if you have a telnet server running on it.

If after this it still happens tell us what the specs of your system are and we can go from there, it's probably a hardware or driver problem if you get this far.

That happened to me in redhat 7.1 under KDE as well. The machine was virtually unpingable and totally locked, keyboard, mouse, etc... all locked completely. I have no idea what caused it and there was nothing in any of my logs. I do however assume that it has something to do with the power management settings. Try recompiling your kernel and dont enable any power management settings(make them as modules) and see if this helps. My system works fine now but then again I am in Slack 8. Good Luck

thanks for replies ...

First , I tried different things and it happens not only in KDE ...

Gaccm , yes , it freezed , it even freezed to times while still loading KDE up

and keyboard is not functional in freeze, so can't go to console :(

I use Mandrake 8.1 , fresh install

I reinstalled it, and the same thing :(

idealego ...

I do overclock my cpu , and win2k/win98 work perfectly on it, and some time ago I had linux installed Mandrake and RedHat and they worked absolutely fine on OC cpu (after that I think I just added 512 MB of RAM ... can this be a problem ? )

will try pinging later ...

my specs are :
Duron 600@1060
1024 MB RAM (Generic mixed)
Geforce 2 MX
1 IBM 30 GB 7200 RPM
1 WD 40 GB 5400 RPM
Abit KT7-Raid mb
...

by the way , first I had crash not because of this, but b/c of VMWare , maybe corruption in my hdd did something ... but yet after formatting hdd - absolutely the same thing :(

thanks.

Since it would likely take 3 minutes to clock your cpu to the correctly rated speed and take the case off, it's a simple way of narrowing down the problem.

If you're using the nvidia driver, try the "nv" driver and see if that makes any difference, I know it's sucks but it's extremely stable.

More ram sticks can add to instability, try running it with just one and see what happens.

It can take quite a few tests to figure out what's wrong but start with easy ones like what I've suggested first.

idealogo :

well , ok, I removed that 512 mb ram b/c it didn't add much performance even to win2k anyway ...

and it looks like linux works good ... didn't freeze thru night ... the only time it freezed is when I started to use IglooFTP-Pro , but that IglooFTP crashes all the time, don't know why :(

and yes I can ping that comp when it freezed, I just didn't have telnet server set up at that moment, so couldn't connect...

by the way , how would I go about killing X from telnet ? ... or restart ?

thanks :)

If you can ping the computer when it freezes it's likely video related. Try the "nv" driver. Is your agp overclocked?

anton

no , my agp is not overclocked ...

if it would freeze again , I would try different driver :)

and as of those gui ftp programs, I dumped them and started using wget ... it's much simplier and cooler ... I love it ;) ... (that's just a side note, b/c I'm in love for now with wget ;) )

well, it hung again :( ... and this time I couldn't ping it : ( ... it hung when I was unraring 600 mb archive ... what can be the problem here ? ;(

Never in the 7 years I've been using Linux have I had a program crash it. It's always been either from hardware instability or video drivers.

Try clocking your system back to it's regular speed. Anything I suggest, I just mean for you to try it for a few days or maybe a week. Since taking out ram didn't seem to help you can put it back in now :)

just freezed , while loading kde, going to underclock cpu now to 800 (don't feel like running at 600 ;) ) ... and putting ram back :)

well ... had a little problem with computer just now - when was underclocking , it wouldn't start, ppl told me to re-seat video card ... I did and it ran ... so I was thinking maybe there were some problems with video card before also , and that's why linux froze ? ... well , anyway , gonna run comp on 600mhz for now, and we'll see :)
