You should find what you need there.

Don't get discouraged. I actually got the winmodem working on my machine. What distribution are you running? I think the driver you downloaded does depend on what version kernel you have.
What does it do when you type "./ltinst"? If I remember right, it also gave me some weird response but it ended up working with a little tweaking.

First, mount your floppy disk:
mkdir -p /mnt/floppy
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
Then...
cd /mnt/floppy
ls
What comes up? Is it in .tar.gz format or .tgz? If it is in either...
tar xvzf file.tar.gz
Replace file.tar.gz or file.tgz with the actual name of the program that showed up.
It should now be uncompressed. At this point, do another "ls" and see if you see the file "ltinst". If it's there, type "./ltinst" to start installation. If it's not there, see if a new directory has been created. If you see it, go inside it. You should now be able to do "./ltinst"
In addition to the information here, click on the Search link and make a search for "linmodem" in the How-I-Did-It forum. Some systems need a little hack or two to get the linmodem working on a 2.2.16 kernel.

If you do shop for a new modem, spring for an external Hayes. That'll give you the fewest problems in the long run, methinks.
If you can't afford an external modem, make sure the internal modem you buy isn't a Winmodem. Even if your operatign system DOES support the modem, software modems are BAD NEWS: they eat up a ton of CPU time, slow down everything you do, crash stuff, lock stuff up, etc. You get what you pay for...
