Okay -- My housemate has RoadRunner on his computer. Unfortunately he runs Windows 98. I have a small network set up between our machines. . . How can I access the internet via the cable modem on his machine?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

you need to buy a proxy for windows and have him install it.

i think one of the nhfs (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf) on network sharing and stuff mentions this. i forget. as long as you can ping his machine now than it will be really easy to do this. i know winproxy is one such proxy program, but i think it costs $$$ and you can get free ones instead.

you can also get an old box and build a router out of it using a floppy distro (freesco.org, coyotelinux.com), and then plug both computers into a hub into the router. there's a thread saying a little about that here: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=13&t=004879

here's the NHF on getting linux online through a windows proxy: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/network/analogx_winproxy.html

you may want to check out the networking forum for this kind of question next time.

Don’t go and buy a proxy they are slow. If he's running win98 just install ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) from the control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup.

That will work just fine and its fast. :)

you know i thought i remembered seeing something about internet connection sharing, but i'd assumed it was a dream. why would MS offer that so easily when they'd rather boink you for two MSN subscriptions?

does it just act as some kinda transparent proxy? might be worth reading up on the capability to make sure yer not opening up your boxes to abuse.

As far as I know it doesn't have any exploits.
