What are the Linux gurus opinion on the most configurable Linux GUI? In regards to removing toolbars, the "start menu" and the like. Thanx in advance,
Pete

at the risk of starting a war

fvwm2 is the most configurable with the most options and module choices

there is even a fvwm2rc mode for emacs

I second that! :-) Fvwm2 is by far the most configurable around. The one thing I lament is the lack of tabs, which I made great use of whilst I was using Fluxbox.

Check out FVWM themes - http://fvwm-themes.sourceforge.net/ and "Quest for the perfect window manager" - http://www.igs.net/~tril/fvwm/index.html. Both should give you some idea of the awesome capabilities and flexibility of the window manager, and how pretty it can look.

All screenshots bar one on the home site http://www.fvwm.org look utterly ghastly to me, but rest assured... your setup does NOT have to look like that :-D Stick to the two sites above for more appealing screenshots.

FVVM is the *most* configurable wm, but I wouldn't recommend it to newbies since there's too much choice (don't know any other way to say it).

In order to "get your feet wet", I'd recommend Fluxbox, then move on to something else, it you wish.
