Slackware 8.1. How do you start KDE from the command line?
Gnome is my default startx start up.

In your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit directory there is a symbolic link xinitrc pointing to xinitrc.gnome. Delete it and re-create it pointing to xinitrc.kde instead.

Another way is to log in as root, then type gdm or kdm.

if you're using Slack 8.1, you should also be able to use 'xwmconfig' - it will let you pick from the window managers/desktop environments you have installed.
