is it two 512mb chips?

try running each by themselves and see if they are both showing up as 512mb apiece.

I think most kernels (that come with your favorite distribution) do not support 1GB RAM. I'm almost certain that you have to recompile (the kernel).

I have a box with the same situation; I just have yet to recompile.

Yup, kernel recompile is necessary to get all the memory recognized...just select highmem support (4GB) and you'll be fine.Hope this helps.

...not that you really NEED one gig of RAM or anything. :D It's not like you are running Windows.

Its just high density memory thats not compatible with Intel chipsets, has to be Athlon or Via chipsets. Its the cheap stuff.

The most ram I've ever filled on Windows XP is ~330MB/512MB... on Linux, I can use it all. I guess Linux is just better at taking advantage of my system.

"Enterprise Kernel 2.4.8: This special edition of the kernel provides native support for Hi Memory (>1024 MB) and SMP (Symmetric Multi Processing)
