Most everyone is going to recommend either LimeWire or gIFT. I have not used either. I hear that both are a little tricky to get installed.

Give them both a try and see which you like better! I use WinMX in Windows also....I sure wish they would make a Linux version!!!

giFT is the better of Limewire and giFT. and giFt although is intimidating is quite easy to install. limwire requires too much memory

I just installed gtk-gnutella and it works okay. Searching for stuff is pretty slow, but I Iike how you can download songs in seperate "chunks" and then put them together after all the "chunks" are downloaded.

I just started using Python Soul to Soul - pyslsk - and it works very well. I also use Kazaa Lite under wine and that works perfectly.

GTK Gnutella was the easiest to get installed and running for me. I can find pretty obscure bands on there, too, so it works for me.

I haven't found a decent p2p app in linux yet. Windows has some I like and I just go into the registry to remove the third party stuff so I'm not really worried about most of those. I'm actually amazed that so few p2p apps have been ported to linux. Before I started looking for one I had assumed that there would be a good selection... I was gravely mistaken.

Fell in love with no ads popping up all the time....

Also nice configuration options....you can set up for no downloads < whatever speed (or allow it to download a song at 2 Kps for a week <g>)....plus when you are searching for something (if you leave connected all week) it will re-search as it connects to different clients. Had excellent results in searches (even for abstract stuff). Not a resource hogging as some of the other ones either (i've got an old system, and leave it running all the time...doesn't seem to phase my resources).

It's little disheartining the first 30 minutes while it looks for active connections....but well worth the wait :)

Only one I really liked for windoze was Kazaa....but those da## ads!!!!!

Well, just pop in a username and password of your choosing, then choose which directories you want to share etc. Then, connect. All should be fine.

well .. when i try to setup syslsk i get this error

raise DistutilsPlatformError(my_msg)
distutils.errors.DistutilsPlatformError: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/lib/python2.2/config/Makefile (No such file or directory)

and i don't know why , i installed Python 2.2 and the other files that pyslsk needs to run .

never mind .. looks like pyhonlib wasn't installed .. my bad :o

don't i have to fill in a server name in the settings window ?

i tried mldonkey, edonkey, limewire, gtk-gnutella, and phex and more...
i haven't tried gift, yet,, however, the best p2p application for me was gtk-gnutella.
and second best was limewire, other applications gave me a bit trouble. such as due to my firewall which is built in my router it usually get no connection at all or get disconnected often..
anyways.. try gtk-gnutella simple to install if you get rpm pack. and it works...

How on earth did you get kazaa-lite to run in wine. What about the hosts file entries and stuff? Could you put your method into "How I did it" forum please? Kazaa is HUGE, and I know there are a lot of us who would love to use it in Linux..

OK, but I'm sure I've seen lots of other people who run it under Wine. I cheated a bit, because when installing, it complained about not finding IE4 or higher, and I just couldn't get it installed. So, I just installed it to a Win98 machine that is networked to my Linux box, and copied the whole directory "KazaaLite" and put it in my false Windows directory. I also copied over the system dlls - comctl32.dll, shlwapi.dll, shdocvw.dll, and put them in the same directory.

Then, the command wine kazaa.exe starts it fine.

EDIT - I've just put the same info on How I Did It - http://www.linuxnewbie.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83900 and pcghost, you get a mention, too.:)

I have found that gtk-gnutella installed the easiest, is the easiest to use, and finds everything I want (I also listen to some pretty weird stuff) I recommend it from a new users point of view.
