I have a question. When you compile KDE should you change PREFIX and BIN PREFIX to the KDEDIR set. If not where does the KDE installtaion of RC5 default to?

On RedHat 8.0

That depends on the source. Default is /opt/kde, unless it's a RH rpm.

So if I compile from source i set the KDEDIR to /opt/kde/?

Yes create one if you don't have one and you can alternately add the path to startkde. if "startkde" alone doesn't work.
