I was wandering aimlessly through my local computer store the other day getting price ideas and whatnot for a new machine I'm building, and came across a dual USB2/Firewire card. Since I've been debating which to get (I'm pretty much out of slots) this seemed an answer to my prayers. Question I have is, how good is USB2 and/or Firewire support for Linux now? I have SuSE 8.1 with the 2.4.19 kernel, and am planning on getting the 2.4.20 kernel tonight when I get home from work; provided I don't completely toast my system while trying to compile/install the new kernel (this will be my first attempt at messing with my kernel outside of SuSEs GUI for it), will there be any kind of support for these protocols? I'd appreciate any info (or just links to info) anyone could provide... thanks ;)

Some information concerning the current status of IEEE1394 (Firewire) support can be found here (http://www.linux1394.org/); this Google search (http://www.linux1394.org/) will give you more.

USB info can be found here (http://www.linux-usb.org/).

2.14.19-16 kernel supports firewire but it's still experimental,so it's not enabled by default,I don't know if things have changed with 2.14.20 either way you'll have to compile;it's not as hard as it sounds ;)
