how to add an alias to the gnome panel?

For example I want to add an alias(link) of gedit to the bottom panel. I did it one not long ago, but now I can seem to remember how?

I remember spotting this in /etc/X11/. In there should be all the folders for the different Windows Managers you use... in that folder is the config file to setup the Menu system. Should be able to add the alias to that config file.
