Ok, I got Debain Linux working and KDE installed. Now, I don't know where to go from there.

I have read a few tutorials on the net, but nothing answers my problems.
I need to know namely, how do I install Gnome, set it as default, install software (tar and gz files) where do they go, how do I get them working, that sorta stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Derrick (Plextor)

p.s, I forgot I even had a user account of these forums. :)

apt-get install gnome

Then, edit your .xinitrc and change the exec line to exec gnome-session

Apt-get has most software, so don't bother with tarballs unless you need to.

PS Debian with tarballs is a nightmare.

Just tried that, didn't work. (

I get that the package cannot be found, and before I typed that in I did a apt-get update as well.

Also, how do I set up user accounts on here?

Plextor, why don't you browse around more on the forum. You'll find the answer to your questions there as well as learn a lot of answers to questions you still haven't asked. As for using the Debian Package Management HOWTO 1.1, read the following: http://www.linuxorbit.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=535
