I'm a newbie to Linux and I'm trying to install Mandrake 8.1 on a Toshiba Portege 7200 CTe with W2K, and a single NTFS partition on the hard drive.

Per instructions, I've repeatedly tried to defrag the windows partition both with the MS defragger and with Norton 2002 scandisk. Both continue to show significant file content down around mid-disk (after a long space of empty space). The two programs also disagree about how much is there, too, but that's a windows problem.

At any rate, has anybody run into this problem and solved it? I find some commercial defrag programs that supposedly work better than W2K's version, but I'd hate to spend 50-70 bucks for less than a complete solution (and not happy about spending it even for that).

Other point: At some point, I read that LILO (?) requires a partition within the first 2GB of the disk in order to boot. Does that mean that I need to order the windows partition (s) away from the top of the disk? Do Mandrake (or other tools) automatically do that? Or is that requirement itself outdated?

Many thanks to all.

Any suggestions on
