I am afflicted with Qworst dsl service. You know the drill: Qwest provides the phone line, and give another $20 to my small local ISP of choice. The problem is that Qworst has given me an internal dsl modem: the Intel PRO/DSL 2100. After installing Mandrake and being unable to connect to the internet, I did a little research and discovered a few things. Intel doesn't support the modem in any way; you probably won't even find it on their website. Qworst is entirely responsible for supporting it and Qworst is not an especially linux-friendly company. I can pay $5 a month for an Adaptec external modem which would connect to my computer via ethernet, but I'd rather just go out and buy one outright. So, unless someone has a linux driver for the 2100, I'm in the market for a new dsl modem. The problem is that most of the modems I've priced online are a little vague in their product description. I've looked at "modems" that upon further examination turned out to be dsl sharing routers. Not what I'm looking for. I'd like to pay as little money as possible for the most basic dsl modem that will work with my Qworst connection and is either supported by linux or externally connects via ethernet or USB. Any recommendations or help would be greatly appreciated.

I just ordered Qwest DSL and it seems like the Action Tec 1520 is the best router they offer and the only one that will work with Linux obviously because of the ethernet interface. When I told them I used Linux they automatically sent me the Action Tec.

Cisco makes a good product when I had DSL before their DSL router 675 at the time worked flawlessly and set up was pretty smooth. The trick is getting one to work with Qwest they may have something proprietary in their DSL that will cuase you problems if you use a router they don't like

Good luck

They offered me the Actiontec, but I declined because I didn't want to pay the extra $5 a month. I've had trouble locating a source for outright purchase of the Actiontec router. I'm wondering if maybe they only offer it for sale to telephone companies.

Try here

http://www.actiontec.com/sales/sales_us.html

If you just bought DSL at the 640k range they will loan you the modem for a year after that you pay per month I'll probaly use it for a year and see how it works before I buy

Good Luck
