I once heard of sites that which people came to so they could find out if hackers (or crackers) could get into their system. The sole purpose of it was to improve security. Does anyone know of site(s) that meet this description. The reason I am asking is that I'm writing a research paper for a CS course. Thanks for any info given.

It maps out what ports are open on hosts in a network. Crackers use this to try to enter through one of these ports to gain access to your box.

Ok, I know this is a little off the topic of Linux. But, what better place to ask than a forum full of linux gurus?
Again, this has to do with some hacking research. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place that showed a history of famous hacks (books, web pages, etc.). Who were the hackers? What did they do? Who did they do it to? Did they get caught? I've done a search for a history but can't find anything. I'm not really interested in how they did it. That's not my thing.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

www.attrition.org (http://www.attrition.org) has an archive of defaced websites. You could also check out www.antionline.com (http://www.antionline.com)
Try www.vulnerabilities.org (http://www.vulnerabilities.org). They do a free Nessus scan on you.

Hacks != Cracks. Hackers are people like RMS or Linus Torvalds who write nifty pieces of software. Crackers are the l33t skr1pt k1dd13 types who deface web pages and DoS servers "for fun".

Maybe, but that was the usage long ago. Now, Hacker = Cracker. It's meaning has changed because the general populus has changed it. Gay used to mean happy, now it is used as a synonym for homosexual. Don't fight it, It's not worth it, just change along w/ everybody else.
