Well, I'm running RH8.0 on an IBM 390x (PII 400). There are a few things that don't work like the internal modem and the sound is iffy. (see my posting) I bought a Xircom realport net/modem card and am running it as my only pc right now. You can find this similar setup on EBay for about $300(got mine free from work:D , legitimately).

Keep an eye on eBay for the user ibm_global_financing. You can get refurbished laptops direct from IBM in the $400-600 range. I bought a Thinkpad A20m for about $500, then added 256MB of ram to it from Crucial for another $70. It's a Celeron 550, 256MB ram, 12GB hdd, and runs RH7.3 just fine. I don't know about 8.0, since the requirement have increased, but it's a possibility.

I also saw that Best Buy had a deal on a Toshiba >1Ghz Celeron notebook for $500 - after significant mail-in-rebates. I think it was $1000 out the door, so if you can stand to wait 2 or 3 months for that other $500 to come back, that might be an option.

Just be sure to check on the hardware compatibility before you buy. www.linux-on-laptops.com can help with that research.
