my font comes out like squares

again...im having problems with linux....maybe its b/c im on an athlon system and it isnt compatable but anyways heres my problems....i rebooted my computer and now all of my fonts comes out in little squares and barcodes. when i scroll down it goes back to normal but if i close the window and open it again it just turns into all the bars and squares again. somebody please help me i would really appreciate it. thanks

what are you talking about? the squares come with you are booting up or when the GUI is booting up? its not beacuse your athalon. What kind of linux are you running? RH, Mandrake, Suse?

no....im saying that when im actually in gnome all of the text that comes out in programs are squares. my terminal doesnt show up like that but internet and other programs do. the desktop is fine and im running red hat 8.0

so then Gnome would be your GUI. I have no idea what the problem is. Personally i dont know what to do with RH beacuse i dislike it and i run MDK so stuff is a little different so i didnt have that problem

Don't know much about Gnome, but it sounds as if your font encoding, ISO 8859-1 , might need to be re-set. There should be some adjust ment in the Gnome Control Panel. Set it to Western, ISO 8859-1. Also check your /etc/X11/XftConfig for the fontpaths and they are still relevant.
How much memory do you have?

this can also happen if your monitor refresh rates are set incorrectly (happens to me at work from time to time).
