I was wondering where the file was on my old REAL windows 98 drive. Or do i have to re download ie? I assume you mean on VMware...? Try Microsoft Update....it might update your browser for you. It's been a while since I used W98 but look in the current IE menu to see if you have that option. animex2 12-18-2002, 02:01 PM Fake Windows drive for WINE. animex2 12-18-2002, 02:12 PM i decided just to re-download ie6 so when i got it. i ran it and i got an error message telling me i gotta be running windows 98 NT 2000 or whatever. In my config file i have the part that says - [Version] "windows" = "win98" and its not helpin  animex2 12-18-2002, 03:05 PM WAH! i got it to download than a debugger came up and froze it up so i said forget it. Im looking for the file on my existing windows 98 thing but i still gotta find it JohnT 12-18-2002, 03:17 PM C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer IE 4.0 is the one that gave windows it's drag n drop capapbilities, active desktop and a host of other things that window users take for granted. If you need to upgrade above 4.0 it'll have to be 5.0 or 5.5 as 98 doesn't support 6.0. No disrespect, but curiosity begs this question. If you can't find a file on windows, how are you possibly going to get around Linux? animex2 12-18-2002, 03:44 PM i found that folder eariler, i just didnt know what to do with it. I put it in my fake c drive and it didnt work. Its still asking me to install IE when i install KaZaA. Anyway im trying to get the debugger to go away so i can install it. I prolly sound like a newbie (like i am) saying that but hey... o well.... JohnT 12-18-2002, 03:50 PM Looks as if your going to have to download 5.0 or 5.5 unless there is some way to link with the present IE. animex2 12-18-2002, 04:26 PM i downloaded 5.5 and while it was "downloading" after i ran the file i download to download the real thing the debugger came up and froze it carlywarly 12-18-2002, 05:50 PM Install Kazaa Lite on your windows machine, and just copy the whole Kazaa Lite directory onto your fake windows directory, along with the necessary dlls ( look at http://appdb.codeweavers.com/appview.php?appId=747 for the details ) Then it should work fine, without IE. As you open the app, it will complain 3 times about ie, but if you click OK on each box, Kazaa Lite will then just work. animex2 12-18-2002, 06:13 PM when i click ok the installation closes along with the window it was in. i prolly have to configure my config so its all in the same window or somethin knute 12-18-2002, 06:29 PM Actually, IE4 was the first one to put itself into the system.1st file. That file is a "clean" copy of your registry. What the install program is most likely looking for is the IE footprint in the system.1st file. If that's the case, then simply copy system.1st to the root of your wine config. That file is in c:\system.1st. It has attributes system, read-only, and hidden. I know about this, because I've used that file an awful lot when I've had to restore a registry. :) HTH animex2 12-18-2002, 07:17 PM and where would one find this system.1st (thats why i called my self the drunken grasshopper) ill search for it in my c:/program files/internet explorer but ya... im a moron so ill prolly post saying i didnt find it animex2 12-18-2002, 07:18 PM forgive me, i found it already. Is this supposed to help me with installing IE or having windows think its already installeD? knute 12-18-2002, 07:32 PM Have windows think it's already installed. animex2 12-18-2002, 08:33 PM and would i do that buy just putting the internet explorer folder in progam files and the system.1st in the "c_drive" ? knute 12-18-2002, 08:48 PM You could try it and see what happens. There may be other dll files that are needed in C:/windows/system, but if those are needed, it will tell you. :) animex2 12-18-2002, 09:56 PM nope, it didnt work :( and i just screwed up my wine beacuse now this happens - the stupid 2nd window and its annoying me so mutch! justlinux.com
