I'm kinda curious... I've been using Mandrake 7.2 for awhile now, but I've been getting fed up with the difficulties in installing packages on here...would it make more sense to switch to Redhat 6.2 (with the updates & stuff)?

I noticed that a lot of places use RPMs for their software... hmmmm

actually, I probably should mention that I'd like to put Linux on my grandma's pc (heh heh) and my own, and I'm kinda looking also for something that will be easy (for me) to update and repair, as well as something that will allow us to exchange data between the 2 pc's (hers and mine, which will most likely have the same distros installed)...

Well, I haven't used Mandrake so maybe I'm not the right person to say anything about this, but as far as I understand something, Mandrake is RedHat based so I really doubt that installing packages would be easier... of course, depends on what kind of problems you are getting when trying to install those packages.

If you're looking for something that's easy to update, I'd recommend Storm Linux because it has a great package management, but then again, that uses deb packages...

not to make fun of Mandrake or anything, but one of the things that bugs me about it is that DrakConfig (you know what I mean) is so ridiculously simple that you hardly ever know what settings you *really* have (i.e. firewall settings, user settings, etc.)...I'm kinda wondering whether Redhat is a little more, uh, informative in these areas than Mandrake is...

also, my grandma more than likely won't be using her pc for much more than browsing the web, chatting (irc & icq), and some word processing, so I don't really need that much in that area, and I, personally, will not need too much 'stuff', either...I'm really just looking for a distro that I can use when I need to, and effectively configure when I need to...

I've found RH 6.2 very user-friendly. The RedHat Package Manager (rpm) is simple for basic stuff like installs, but very powerful for the more advanced things.
