Hi

I have just installed Mandrake 8.0 in an old Pentium II 166 with a 20Gb HDD and a Hot Rod Ultra 66 ATA card. After installation, the computer would not boot from the HDD and it would display 01 01 01 all the way accross the screen. I had to create a Boot Disk for the system to boot. Does anybody know why is the system not booting from the HDD? Also, and I do not know if this is related or not, but the RPM manager will not install any updates because it tells me that the updates are already installed even if they show as available updates from one of the remote sites.

Any help on this matter is appreciated

Try looking at your BIOS for boot sequence.

The 01's usually mean a disk geometry problem. How are your partitions setup and sizes, multibooting and where did you install the bootloader?

I do not know what my partizion sizes are, but the HDD has only Linux on it and the Bootloader was installed on MBR.

Sorry dude,

BUtit sounds like your BIOS doesn't like a bootloader, mine's teh same way. Only way to get around it is not install LILO in your MBR, just use a boot disk to get into linux

hope that helps...

Search this forum for "repair MBR" for instructions on how to get windows back. Then go to www.littlewhitedog.com (http://www.littlewhitedog.com) and look at the article on dual booting Windows 2000 and Linux (The process they describe works exactly the same for Windows 98/95 and probably ME. It's not JUST for win 2K).

When you re-install remember what drive you mapped to root i.e. which drive has the mount point /

Put Lilo there, not in the MBR. Then follow the instructions from the little white dog and you'll be golden.

But I do not have Windows loaded of any kind.
