I'm thinking about changing from Win98 into Linux, but before the switch I need to know if there are any good notation programs for Linux (I'll probably get Red Hat 8). It's essential for me to have a powerful notation program, since I'm studying to be a professional musician. Currently I'm using Sibelius.

The features I need are MIDI keyboard support, so I can insert notes from the keyboard, lots of different musical symbols to add, MIDI playback, ability to print the music... Are there any programs with these features?

The Sound and Music Software (http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/354/) article from freshmeat.net

Also search there for noteedit.

Thanks, that was fast!

I've already checked out the NoteEdit homepage, but I didn't get it clear whether you are able to print in NoteEdit or not. Otherwise it seems fine. And what about Brahms, is the score editor any good? A midi sequencer in the same package sounds nice.

I only installed Noteedit at work just to see if it would work. It has so far though I haven't configured the audio devices or tried to print.

I do have a Roland Midi Controller and Roland soundcard in one of my home pc's which is sitting there without any OS. I just need the time to install Linux and try out some of those sequencers etc. mentioned in that article.

I'm not a musician though. Just one of my many toys. :)

I've heard good things about Brahms (haven't tried).
