I'm nowhere near being a guru, but, if your present kernel detects all your stuff, then why bother with another kernel?.
If you just want to experiment with the new kernel, you can always keep your old one as a backup.

I should have given more info. I want the USB capabilities, and I heard the new kernal does not have as much lag, that it's much faster. I don't know if this second item is true or not.
I am using red hat 6.2
Thanx!

As long as you do not delete your current kernel and keep an entry for it in your lilo.config you should be fine if things don't work out for you on the new kernel.
As linus has said, 2.4 has better memory management and a better architecture. A lot of people (myself included) have been using 2.4 kernels for a while now.

Actually, Linus said "It's better"
..."It's better", was the only printable quote. Pressed for details, Linus bared his teeth and hissed at reporters...
