I was wondering why someone has to pay a service charge every month to play games on LINUX.
Is there way to download the WINE X software to play games without this company?
Thanks

You aren't paying a service charge. You are paying for a subscription that enables you to download the newest version. If you suscribe for one month ($5) you can download as many times as you want for that month and then even after it expires you can still play the games.

I'm getting the idea you don't know exactly how WineX works. I think they have a README or something at the site but the basic idea is that it allows Windows games to run in Linux. You use the same CDs. I literally just installed Jedi Knight II. To do it, I mounted the cd and ran winex /cd/Install/JediOutCast.exe. After it installs, I went to the directory the game installed to (it creates a folder called Transgaming_Drive in the home directory of whoever installs it, think of this as C:\) and typed winex JediOutcast.exe. Basically, typing winex and then the name of the .exe you want to run will try to run it. So instead of doing e:\setup.exe (windows), you do winex /cd/setup.exe (obviously /cd is my cd drive's mount location). Follow?

What is mounting a CD?
Why does that TRANSGAMING company charge a service for this to work?
Where can I read instructions for this new product?
Are the graphics the same as a WIN XP platform game?
Remember Linux NEWBIE Here
Abe
mounting a file system allows Linux to see / use the file system. if a file system is not mounted, linux can't use it.
it isn't free "probably" because it costs them money to develop it. for the small cost of the subscription, i highly doubt they make a profit. aslo - with a subscription you ge tot vote on what games you want them to work on support for next, etc.. their product is available in a free version however you have to compile it from source and it does not include support for game copy protection therefore on many games you would have to crack the game files with a no-cd crack to make the game run.
Warcraft III runs better for me under linux than XP. if you go to their site, you can search on a per game basis and see how well individual games run.

Mounting a CD is the process of taking a CD that is in your CD drive and making it so your computer acknowledges it. It's done by:
mount /dev/cdrom
This really takes the contents of the CD and places them in the /dev/cdrom folder. You can execute them from here.
Winex in my opinion is not really worth paying for. And it handles warcraft 3 poorly in particular. What Wine or WineX does is emulate certain windows files so that you can play windows games under Linux. But getting Warcraft to work is a lot of work. It can be done. But I really question if it is worth it. I was very dissapointed with Winex. Works great with some things...works very poorly with others. Your a victim of experimentation really here.

I have doen some reading and I agree. What do you think of Transgaming?
And my final qiestion is should I stick with LINUX games like QUAKE 3 and Unreal Tournament 2003?
Made for LINUX?
Abe
The benchmarks on Tomshardware show QIII blowing away the WINDOWS version.

The problems tend to be more spefic then general. In that I mean I might install and run WCIII perfectly out of the box. Install winex on another machine and have to tweak it to get it to work. The "tweaking" usally is not that bad(copying some .dll's from a true windows folder) and part of that $5 subscription gets you unlimited technichal support in a forum base enviroment. Every problem I have had they have solved within 2 days. If you get tired of rebooting to play games and can deal with a slight drop in fps then it is worth it. If you don't like setting up things and have to have the absolute max fps you can get then this is not for you. Also make sure to check the games supported before subscribing. This is a work in progress where you download updates weekly sometimes, so not all games are supported yet. Thats were the voting comes in, it lets Transgaming know where to put the right priorities in development.

Thanks why arent more companies out there supporting games for LINUX. It is a no brainer. I have QIII for LINUX and it is awesome. Faster frame rates than QIII in WIN XP PRO at home

You would need the linux version of the game. Actually a different cd that was ported to linux. Winex runs the win cd's by emulating windows. Checkout http://www.happypenguin.org/news for ported linux games. Oh and http://www.linuxgames.com/ is good too.

ok i will i neeed to get it to see the difference off the 2 os wish runs better
From what i've heard so far, windows is a better platform to play games, still. Fps used to be higher in Win. I thinks the main problem is because drivers for linux are not solid as windows (most companies doesn't really care about linux, we are minority anyway). But if you have something different, then please let us know.
I personally use WineX to play Warcraft III (somehow WinXP doesn't allow me to play sound!). So I shrink my winXP partition even further, now contains only IE. I keep it just in case i need to run something important in windoze, like an educational program from school. Back to WC III, well, my roomate choose to reboot and play under WinXP. I got a better machine. The result is, my game loads about twice longer. But he has to reboot his computer every two games or so (sometimes it just crashes in the middle of the game). So, whichever you choose :D
