My first attempt at installing Debian went OK but I was not satisfied with the way I had things set up. So I found an article on the OSNews web site and followed this fellow's Debian installation advice in his article called "The Very Verbose Debian 3.0 Installation Walkthrough" at this link:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016&page=all

The article gave good advice and the installation went perfectly. If you want to install and run Debian 3 you might check out this excellent walkthrough.

I've been looking for my favorite distro for a few months now. I've been through about ten. (Not ready for LFS yet, though....I'm saving that one...) Anyway, If you like Debian, and the way it installs...you should definitely check out Gentoo. I'm liking this one a lot!
