First, I am new to linux, lost, clueless, and scared.

System info:
SuSE distro 7.1
Kernel 2.4

Modem info:
Conexant Softk56 PCI

From here I am lost. I am trying to escape windows, but unfortunately I was raised by it. I can't seem to find the IRQ or port address (beyond that it is Com3.) I read the NHF on installing modems, kind of blindly went through the steps without much understanding what I was doing and now when I run the internet dialer in KDE I get "Modem is busy" which I suppose is an improvement on the "Cannot find..."

Any help, even if it is just a push in the right direction is more than appreciated. Once I can get myself online through Linux, i won't have to do this Windows/Linux back and forth switching. Thank all of you for taking the time to read this and comment.

i'm not sure but Conexant Softk56 PCI looks like a winmodem. you're not gonna have much luck with that if it's. try www.linmodems.org (http://www.linmodems.org)

Arghhh! It IS a  winmodem  . Just my luck. Okay, can anyone suggest a reliable modem I should buy? Should I go with internal or external? Should I take this opportunity and go broadband?

Thank you all.

Broadband would be my choice or else have a look at the many 'Recommend a modem' threads in General, Hardware or Networking.

There's usually one every other day.
