Thanks for reading post, i have install Redhat 7.1 to CTX laptopinstall appears to went ok,ie; root pw, user id, user pw. i picked laptop installation.
Once completed install and reboot i received a blank screen with the following.
Redhat Linux Release 7.1 (seawolf)
Kernal 2.4.2-2 on an i586

Localhost Login:

Thats it i have tried user name root and user pw, When i hit enter i then get PW prompt i then enter user pw
and i get the following on screen

[ctx@localhost,ctx]$

and then i am lost, What am i doing or not doing.

Ok well what you have done is logged in. And for whatever reason it is not starting xwindows autoamticly on startup. So what you should try doing after you login is typing :

startx

And then pray that it works. But congrats on one thing... the installation did work and you do have linux working on your laptop. The command startx should start xwindows if it quits with erros post those and someone can hlelp you . if it works then lucky you. good luck.

Yes, be happy, your install is happening. Like the above post, type startx and you should get your gui. If you want your gui to start at start up, use Xconfigurator (type it at the prompt), there is an option for gui login which you may want to select. Personally I prefer to startx myself, x can be finicky and sometimes if it crashes on startup you can have problems.

It worked, after typing " startx"
system went right into graphic mode.
this is and older laptop "CTX 800" color and graphics looks nice and clear has both Gnome & Kde desktops both looks very nice.
i was so close yet so far away.

if you change your defult runlevel in /etc/inittab to 5 you should be able to boot to the gui and not have to type startx.
