Ok, i just compiled the 2.4.20 kernel for my Redhat 8 (on my other K6-2 400mhz computer) and i haven't yet rebooted, i have a TNT-2 M64 video card and hadnt installed the old nvidia drivers on it. should i compile the new drivers myself from source before rebooting or should i reboot first, or should i download the RPMs that NVchooser.sh tells me to????

I say use the NVchooser.sh method. It worked fine for me with Mandrake 9.0.
I would say that reboot using new kernel first (and ofcourse you are making that so that you can boot using old kernel if new is not working). After reboot install Nvidia kernel driver from tar package rpm's doesn't like that you change your default kernel.

You need to be booted to the new kernel in order to compile and install the nvidia kernel driver.
Either boot into runlevel 3 (text mode) or change your /etc/X11/XF86Config (-4) to load the 'nv' driver instead of 'nvidia'.
Reverse the changes you made to XF86Config for the original nvidia driver.
I always keep 2 copies of my X config. One for nv and the other for nvidia. I just rename as required.
