mine perhaps too specific a question to be placed in the generic pile but here it comes anyway...

I have a sony vaio pcg-f610 that came with window me (argh!) deciding to go totally microsoft free I installed mandrake 7.2 and now I have no sound... I have a feeling the conputer was compatible with the window sound system but came without sound card (I'm not even sure if what I've just written makes any sense...) but I have no way to ascertain that...

here comes my question (s):
which of the many linux outthere is most compatible with the pcg-f610? should I just buy a soundcard? shoud I upgrade to mandrake 8? or (here comes the melodramatic finale) should I just toss the damn thing and start writing on legal paper again?

if anyone can help me out I'd really apreacheate it

What type of soundcard does the system have? If you would boot into Windows, take down as much information as possible about the make/manf/model of components in your system, you can more than likely get them running under Linux, unless they're some sort of 'Win' product - that is they are made specifically to be used with Windows. Its always best to avoid products such as this for compatibilities sake, but you dont always have the option of what comes in a pre-built system, a reason so many of us build our own. Please either make a list of the hardware or do a search for your system on Sony's website or perhaps google.com (http://www.google.com). It may be just as simple as loading the appropriate module for the card, you never know.

If the Vaio if fairly new, then you would probably be better off installing Mandrake 8.0.
