i have been using redhat and mandrake now for some time, but really want to try something different such as slack and debian as i have heard many good things about these.
i have both on cd
7.1
2.2
respectively, try to install, but it doesnt support my realtek ethernet card, nor does a good X config. i suppose since using an easy install such as rh and mdk i am not used to this
can anyone help me with this or point me in the right direction
AND
whats this about apt-get, i hear loads of good things about it but no idea what it does or how to use it.

Well, if your ethernet card works in RH, there's no reason for it not to work in Slackware or Debian. As you don't tell us what kind of card it is I can't help you configure it.
Why don't you take the XFree86 config from RH and use it in Slackware|Debian?

If you want to setup X, your best bet is to either copy the config from your redhat system(if you liked that setup) or...
use XF86Setup, or xf86config(yes all lower case)
as for your network card, as the person before me posted, we need to know what type of network card it is and if it worked in redhat it'll work in debian and slackware too.

Your card will work just as well in debian as in redhat.. just find out what module it uses.. if its realtek, try (as root) typing: modprobe via-rine (or whatever, but thats the modules name..)
That works for me.

I use the same NIC
its one of the most widely used NIC's out there and linux supports it with ease.
just like he said use the ne2k-pci, I compile it right into the kernel not as a module
but either way will work

You make the call. I personally would prefer an organization of human developers over a corporate entity any day...

Come on, that's a bit of a cheap shot. So Pat V and clan (http://www.slackware.com/about/) chose .com for a TLD, big deal. Read about the developers and find out more about Walnut-Creek. Tell me you never d/l'ed any software from Walnut-Creek back in the day. They're just as supportive of the Linux community as the next!
This is not a flame ;)
