This is a silly little thing, but I think it's worth mentioning if it helps even one other person. My phone line connects to my surge protector, and then I have a splitter connecting one line to my DSL router (Alcatel SpeedTouch Home) and the other to my regular phone.

Very occasionally, like once every 4 months, my phone would go dead on this setup - not even a dialtone. The same phone worked fine on other phone jacks (yes I'm using filters throughout). On the most recent occurence of this, the DSL connection seemed very uneven. Sometimes streaming 128kbps RealAudio was fine but then all of a sudden, it would stall and take a long time to buffer. This was with different webcasters.

So finally I checked the phone cord I was using to connect the surge protector to the phone jack, and it was only two wire rather than four. Replacing that cable has led to much more "even" DSL service over the last two days, and my voice phone on the splitter works again.
