Well, Apache 2.0.40 is up and running, however, while I can enjoy my beautiful web pages, no one else can. That's right, if you're outside of my den, you cannot see my pages!
However, I'm hoping that this is just a limited time offer...What's that you say? There's a way to fix this? Well come on down partner and belly up to the box!
I can see them locally using my local IP's, but not with the router IP...(i.e. 192.168.1.100 - does work, 24.197.232.149 - doesn't work)
Config:
apache 2.0.40
RH 8.0
Linksys Router
XP machine on same network...
Thanks!

In my router setup? Yes...From 80 to 80 and from 8080 to 8080...

Have you checked to see if your ports are open?

LOL, I'm paranoid about ports. :) And I want to see your beautiful pages! :)

Is the linux gateway IP address set to the router?
Does your ISP block ports 80 and 8080?

That's the question that's been coming up by a couple of people...I don't know if they do or not...According to their documentation, they "don't allow" webhosting so I'm wondering if they were smart enough to actually kill ports 80 and 8080...
Cynthia...I checked out Nano and they are stealthed..:) Which is good and bad...I'm glad that no one can see them, but at the same time, I'd like to see them now...;)

Gee, I hate to break your bubble, but chances are good that if they don't allow something, they don't allow something
This may sound like a dumb question to ask, but have you ever tried setting the IP of your apache machine as the DMZ host through the router? It leaves your stuff directly exposed to the net, but it is a quick and dirty way to get it done if your ISP hasn't blocked off those ports specifically.

Well, Charter Pipeline hasn't convinced me that they know anything about much of anything...This is what it says in their FAQ:
Can I host a server with this service?
Unfortunately, hosting servers is not allowed with our residential cable modem service. This includes, but is not limited to, web servers, ftp servers, and mail servers. If you want to run a server, contact your local cable provider for information about obtaining a commercial subscription.

If your ISP is blocking 80 and/or 8080 would signing up for a mydns.com domain and having it point to your server running on say port 81 help? It won't if you have your heart set on a specific domain name, but in that case you'd be better off signing up for a business or commercial subscription from your ISP.

Well, I actually got it to work until I made some changes, but now at least I know it works! :) I can get there from here so now it's just a case of tweaking it back to where it was, and then not messing with it...:)
IN regards to the business or commercial packages, I actually just emailed my ISP (Charter Communications), and got the info pack including pricing...Yow! It's a nice little chunk of change...

switching from a residential account to a commercial account at home, I go from my residential settings of:
8 IP addresses
1.5mbps/128kbps
7.5 gigs max transfer per month
$ 44.99 a month (including $5 month equip rental)
to commercial settings of
1 static IP
512kbps/128kbps
7.5 gigs max transfer per month
$ 64.99 a month (including $5 month equip rental)
the depressing part? I work for the cable company

Yeah, unlike stealing cable, hiding bandwidth is a different story...:)
At my previous residence, the hook-up to the duplex was so simple that it would have been easy to just put a splitter on the cable coming into the duplex and "share" the cable between the two units. In fact, that's how they had it hooked up when I moved in...All that would have had to have been done, was unhooking the front unit's, plugging in a new splitter, then re-attaching a connector for my unit, and shazam! I've got cable and don't have to pay for it...
But of course, I was WAY to ethical to do something like that...;)

If you have a cable router setup, some cable router MFG'r have a web interface for configuration which can be accessed via the external address (remotely). I believe both Linksys and D-Link have this capability.
I would enable remote admin (with password) and ask a friend to try and access your router.
If they can access your router, then your port forwarding more than likely is not working properly.
As another test, set up port forwarding for TELNET and get this same friend to telnet to your web server or even SSH...or FTP. Basically...look at each connection of the physical link to your box. Process of elimination.
you get the idea.
Good luck
