I am just wondering if there is a difference between the RPM structure for Mandrake and the RPM structure for RedHat.
Thanks.

RH7 has a newer RPM installer and programs compiled on RH7 won't run on anything but RH7. Mandrake RPM's use the older but more ubiquitous installer. They are also compiled for Pentium systems so they run faster. There is no problem with using Mdk rpm's on RH7. There are problems with running RH7 rpm's on anything but RH7.
Older RH6.2 rpms work everywhere, just like Mdk.
If possible, I use Mdk because they will run faster (compiled for Pentium class machines, remember?).

I've never bought this. I wouldn't recommend running pgcc in a production environment.

klamath is right,i've used pgcc for a while without problems until 2.4.0 came out...compiled then new kernel on my lfs system, rebooted only to find out that my kernel will not boot due to FXSR not being 16byte alligned on PIII.Thanks so much for pentium optimizations http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif,no worry i get the newsst gcc and all is fine.Just sharing some of my findings...if it ain't broke don't fix it http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
