I have tried to install RH 8.0, MDK 9.0, & Lycoris (the only version so far, from what I know) & when I start any install I can't use my keyboard or my mouse. Any idea if I have to change something in my BIOS?

I have a M$ USB wheel mouse optical & a standard (?) Compaq USB keyboard.

Maybe this can help people.

How do I upgrade my bios?

I have tried to configure it manually with the Advanced install with MDK 9.0, but when I choose USB wheel mouse & contiure the install.....when I reboot to start, I can't move my mouse or my keyboard.

I'm gonna try to find some USB to PS2 adapters tonight. I've called around to some places & no one has any. :(

Wish me luck.

Check your bios settings and ensure USB is being assigned a irq and/or USB legacy support is enabled.

yeah. my bios has settings to default to a usb keyboard. for the usb mouse, there are ways to get around the lack of that (later installation), however the keyboard would be important.

I use a USB wireless keyboard and mouse with Mandrake 9.0/WinME/Knoppix, and don't have a bit of trouble. I also use an USB MS Intellimouse Explorer with another Mandrake 9.0 box with no problem.

I don't think the problem is with Mandrake, RedHat, Gentoo, or any other distribution, but with your hardware. Are the USB ports native to your motherboard, or are you using an adapter card to give you USB support. Does that card(if any) need driver support? Do you have "Legacy USB Support" enabled in your bios?

Try posting your system specs.

Yes, my computer is a Compaq, it's a.....

Presario 5000
AMD Duron 800MHz
256K memory
hda-40 gig
hdb-70 gig
8MB Nvidia TNT 2 Vanta LT.....

that's all I know about it. :(

I D/Led a BIOS agent that told me this.....

BIOS ID: unknown
BIOS date:11/20/00
BIOS signon:unknown
BIOS Type:unknown
Super I/O:VIA 686 rev 34 found at port 14h
Chipset:VIA 82C691 rev 3
OEM Signon:

Are the USB ports native to your motherboard?

Yes, they are. I bought it brand new about a year ago, & only added more RAM & an extra HD.

Anyone that has helped so far......thank you very much.

Your Presario is newer than my 5000 bios, so I doubt that is the problem. You might try using different mouse types doing an upgrade install so you don't have to do the whole install over again. To enter your bios setup, press the F10 key repeatedly when your system first starts up while the cursor is flashing in the upper right hand corner. It will take you to a setup screen. select advanced, make sure the pci and usb options are selected. You can also change the usb IRQs here. Make sure you make note of the current usb IRQs so you can return it to the original state if necessary.

LMAO

Upgrading the processor would be good.....just one small factor.

THe places around where I live go for the throat when they sell things. I would order from the net, but have been burned one too many times.

I'm gonna try to find some P/S2 keyboards & mice @ work & see if they'll work.

Thanks again!

My BIOS for my USB keyboard are set up to "Legcy", which should be the setting if I remember correctly.

Go back into the bios, select Advanced, Bus Options, make sure pci bus mastering is Enabled. Move up to PCI Device, check the IRQs on Onboard USB Controller, make sure they are different than the other devices on the list. You can select different numbers with the right arrow key. Try 11 or some other number than the other devices. If that doesn't work, I'd try different hardware or installation choices for the hardware. The legacy you refer to is in the Device Options, it is OK.

That was it, I tried 05, 10, & 11.

I'm now posting this using my KDE desktop using MDK 9.0.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
