Which is better?

For what? ;P

IMHO, for my purposes, RedHat.

Basically, the way I see it, Mandrake makes it really easy to get up and running. Almost too easy. But it does give you a taste, a hint at the underlying power. It just does so much of the work for you, that I feel like I'm loosing control of the system. At the other end of the spectrum, are distros like Debian & Slackware, that do practically _none_ of the setup for you. RedHat kind of strikes a balance for me. It automates enough of the low level stuff like sound drivers if I need them, w/o getting in the way. The easier a system is to setup, it seems, the harder it fights you when you want to change it's default behavior, i.e. M$ Windows. The easier or more flexible a system is to configure to your every little whim, the more of a PITA it is to setup if you don't know the system inside and out i.e. Slackware. Mandrake is pretty close to Win9x/2k on this scale, perhaps 85-90 on a 100 pt scale, w/ M$ taking the 100 pt spot. RedHat is somewhere around the 50-75 range. Slackware is down around 25-30, IMHO. LFS, takes anchor-man honors at 0 ;)

Take it for what it's worth. Buy what you can get your hands on, learn it, stick with it if it works for you, otherwise move on and try another.

I have to say I tried out redhat at first and found it difficult to get started out with, however that was over a year ago. I then heard about Mandrake, and found it wonderful to start out with. I have been using it for a year and I love it!

If you are new to linux, then i would suggest Mandrake, If you want a taste of Debian without any hassles about installing, then i would suggest either Libranet or Progeny, Also Red Hat 7.0 is quite easy to install.

But Mandrake has probably the best hardware detection of the lot.IMHO.

Well i've tried Suse, Mandrake, Red HAt and Slack, so far Red Hat 7.1 is the only one that has worked well for me. Suse kinda worked, but the screen would shake, Mandrake was horrible for me, even the installer looked low res, but i think it was just because it didn't like my video card. But Rh 7.1 has so far been a dream... only thing that doesn't seem to wanna work is WindowMaker...

I'm voting for RH 7.2. I agree that Mandrake is probably the best for new users, (it's what I started with) but now I have a bit more experience I prefer RH. I don't have any experience with earlier versions, but I found the installation no harder than Drake, and it autodetected all my hardware correctly. Also Drake just looks too ugly out of the box. I do miss the rpmdrake tool though!

I originally started out with RH 6.0 and it was extremely difficult to configure for 1st timer. I then switched to Caldera which did just about everything on it's own. Since then I have returned to RH7.1 and I agree it's a nice mix. It configured all the basics so all I had to do was setup some extras. ie samba and dsl.
