Hi,
I'm a NEW user of mandrake 9 since last friday with dual boot with my win2k. I managed to install it ok (luck i guess) but now i have a "few" problems:

- I have a EPSON 1250 and a Diamond Supraexpress 33.6 external modem but neither is recognized by mandrake. I runned HardDrake but nothing happens. (i want to recieve faxes with my modem) Where can i get the latest drivers and how can i install them?
I read about iscan for my epson scanner but i didn't get it to work. It seems that i must update my kernel. I don't know what to do now :(

- I have a HP920 connected to a win2k machine which is connected to a network and i want to use it. I installed samba and now i can view the partitions of my network. i run the wizard on my mandrake control center but when i try to print a test page, nothing works What now? I guess i must especify IP and etc but i don't know how..

- I also have an ADSL connection on this win2k machine and i to use it on my linux. I tried to configure it on the mandrake control center: It detected my network card but it doesn't connect.

If i can't print, scan and surf why the heck do i need linux??
(although i love the aqua theme :) )

I didn't get vmware to work also but i'll post this problem another day..

I really aprecciate any help.

Best regards,

Filipe, from Portugal

I have none of the hardware that you posted, so I will just post a few links that hopefully will help.

For the scanner, try Mandrake's own online documentation and http://www.mostang.com/sane/

The modem you can probably solve with the Modem related NHF's right here at LNO.

www.samba.org should have docs to help with setting up and configuring a printer in Samba.

www.linuxprinting.org may also help.

Does the ADSL use pppoe? Speedtouch?

Only you can answer that. I'm perfectly happy with only running Linux at home so it's your decision if you want to use Linux or not.

It's not going to be the same as Windows. You are in the Unix world now and it takes a bit of learning.

I've searched throw the site you indicate but all seems too confuse for me... ...editing config files and work in the console isn't for me.. I only know some basic commands and that's all!
Is there any better way (windows-like) to do it?

Filipe

(sorry i'm a linux newbie and i've never worked with linux before)

(the console remindes me my good MS-DOS times:) )

If theres anyone how lives in Portugal and is reading the message, please help me. I'll pay you to come to my office to get all my hardware working with linux :)

Do you not have X/KDE/Gnome working where you can use one of the many gui text editors and file managers?

Yes, i use KDE 3 in Mandrake 9. The problem is that the installation processes are quite confuse for me. I only learned this weekend how to install RPM's but when in comes to tar files.... oops. In one week of using linux i think i'm not so bad..

cheers,

Filipe

here is the solutions for almost all my problems:

For everyone who has problems with iscan and their epson 1250photo, here is the solution:

Type:
# modprobe scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x010F

then type:
iscan

And that's it! So simple!

-------

to install a network printer, just run the printer wizard at the KDE control panel. I tried printerdrake but it didn't work for me.

-------

To connect to the internet throught our network, be sure to configure your windows machine (where is connected to modem) first. And then configure it on the mandrake control center.
(i suggest installing wingate on your win machine)

And that's all

Thanks
