Hi,
I tried to install the Mandrake 9.0 distro using the CD iso and when it starts to load the setup into memory, it freezes up. If I disable the second IDE channel on the bios, it works perfectly. This is what I have on my box:
P-III - 800Mhz - 512M Ram
IDE: 0 - Quantum 60G Hard drive
1 - 56X CD-ROM (used to load Linux)
2 - Mitsume CD-RW
3 - Creative DVD Player.

I also tried installing Mandrake and then enabling the 2nd controller, but when I restart, the system freezes when booting linux. Is there a fix for this? Although I never use my DVD drive, I would like to use the CD-RW under Linux.

Thanks in advance for any info/help/suggestion.

Are the drive jumpers set correctly?

I have the best luck with cable select.

Windows is a little more forgiving than Linux when it comes to the installation.

Are those drives on the secondary channel jumpered as master and slave instead of cable select?

I also have a cdrw and dvd on the secondary jumpered as master/slave and have no problems.

Are both drives detected and configured in the bios? See if adjusting some of the bios settings will help.

Cable select is evil :( Only works on mobos that properly support it. You're better off with Master and Slave on a proper UDMA cable most of the time.

Yeah, I had master / slave on the secondary channel jumpered right. I switched to cable select and that didn't help. I unplugged both cd-roms and when booting up Linux, it froze up at the detecting usb line. Now, if I disable the second ide channel, it works fine. The BIOS detects all drives without issues. I also have a USB mouse and it works fine in MDK 9. Any other suggestions? (other than buying a newer motherboard :) )

Check for bios update and see if there are fix listed for that problem. And i would say that if you have auto-detect ide drives (better if every boot) setting in bios that you enable that.

Got the latest BIOS update and this fixed it.
