What do I need to change to shorten the timeout in lilo? I tried changing timeout to 50 in /etc/lilo.conf but i still get 50 seconds to choose which OS. What do I need to do?

You need to run /sbin/lilo to write the changes you just made in /etc/lilo.conf to disk.
