okay got myself a machine to get linux burling as an OS, i have tried these OS releases.
Red Hat 7.0
Linux 7.2
SuSe Linux 7.0 Personal

all of which get an error on install....
its (as someone has posted but never solved) on the second stage of install in Mandrake
the line that shows the reason is
"cannot install there may be memory loss" and i have tried a low level format, a format to a "linux ext 2 and linux swap" in partition magic, and just using a boot disk to format it. no partitions and with partitions. and all of this done on two seperate drives! whew thats alot k=now that i think about it, purchased an new drive thinking that was the problem tried a reliable cd drive.nope

i have been told it could be the motherboard as linux can have issues there....
the sys is this

p2 400
gigabyte GA-6BXC (i know its crap dont hurt me!)
32mb pc100 sdram
netgear netwrk card
unknown crappy 2d card (think it might be a trident, no labels on card or serials..)
and at the moment a cdr-rw cd drive cause i know it works.....

any suggestions?

pls help i really wanna get this running as this computer so when i use it well enuff it will take over my windows boot, as with inevitability i am sick of windows crapiness.

you might wanna post, or post a link to this, in the hardware section, if you really think that's the problem.

The mobo has a BX chipset, it shouldn't be a problem.

i cannot get redhat, mandrake, suse, and stormix to install on my old 486 but i don't have a problem installing debian or slackware on the same box. maybe you might wanna give debian or slackware a try.

boy, does this ring a bell with me. i just purchased a megapak from linuxmall.com and tried installing: slack, storm, turbo, mandrake and suse with no luck at all. I started debian, but then with all the choices of apps and minutae associated with it, I decided to forego that until a later date when I had more time. Then I tried Caldera 2.4 (I normally run Caldera 2.3) and it was the only one that installed OK. My system is far from cutting edge: a P200, 32 MB RAM, a SB 16 sound card, ATI Video Xpression vid card - this stuff is about 3 years old. So, my suggestion: try Caldera.

YE GODS MAN!!!!!! YOU INSTALLED WIN2K PRO ON A SYSTEM WITH ONLY 32MEGS?!?!?!?!?! I had 128 and not even that was enough, i had to get 256megs. "win 2k pro work s fine" that is just a lie pure and simple http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
is your memory generic or brand name?
what error do you get when trying SuSe or rhat? what in the world is Linux 7.2??? u mean mandrake? on my sys i had tried installing mandrake (7.0) and it failed, but i was able to install Debian with no probs.

yeah sowwy when i said linux 7.2 meant mandrake....heh missed a vital bit there :P

but i mean it installed win2k
the problem might have been the ram but now i have a new problem i put an apacer 128mb stick in it and a brand new seagate 8 gig drive and a sony cd drive
now when it installs it locks trying to put the mpeg 2 player and video playing support,(i ma at this exact moment hoping to god that taking the package out in a custom install will avert this)
*fingers crossed*
