I'm a fresh newbie to Linux but I need to have access to everything I just lost. I installed Mandrake 8.0 on a laptop that had Win2k fully loaded with all my apps on it. I used the recommended(not expert) install routine and never made a boot disk and I guess it overwrote the boot sector. Is there anyway I can get back into WIN2k. I had two NTFS partitions for win2k (originally d,e)which were untouched during the install although the NT loader files were on FAT16 on C:\. I should have done alot more research before jumping in I guess. I thought the boot loader would have recognized win2k (like powerquest's bootmagic) and give me the option for win2k but it's just not there (Even LILO doesn't seem to be there). I'm positive nothing got overwritten during partitioning. I'm a real newbie to Linux but quite capable with PC's in general (or I thought), Please help. I hope this is reversible since it seems like such a basic thing that Linux shouldn't hose up other installed OS's.

Get a starup diskette for windows from somebody else, boot to dos and type
c:\fdisk \mbr

I guess I'm a little skittish to try an fdisk/MBR. The Mandrake install went fine and I do have an entry in lilo.conf for dos.
But when I choose that I get a 2000 ntoskrnl.exe is missing can't load win2k.
Does this look right?
other=/dev/hda2
label=dos
table=/dev/hda
Any more thoughts would be appreciated if there is some way to get an option to dual boot back to win2k. I'll try the MBR if all else fails.

I thought I'd give a layout of my partitions before and after the install. I had 3 partitions on a 10gig drive. Win2k was loaded on D, both D & E are NTFS. C: was a 2 gig fat partiton. During Mandrake install I resized C to 800mb enough for Windows, then three partitions for linux of the remaining 1.2 gig. When I go into the DOS option in LILO i get can't find ntoskrnl.exe so the nt startup files are there but the path to the system files seems to be different now???

It's fixed. Strangely enough I booted with a startup disk and edit'd the boot.ini and changed the partition from 3 to 4 and that fixed it. The dos entry in LILO now loads up win2k. Whew!!! Now I'm back in business.
