i think it would be a great idea to make a forum where we, as newbies and shuch, could discuss what features we would like to see in a linux distro. maybe those with more knowlege and programming skills could even start a newbie linux distro project.

some of my suggestions would be
slim, uncluttered design similar to slackware
but with a newbie-ized installer
gui config tools that read and write STANDARD
GNU/Linux configuration files
and follow standardized directory trees
maybe this is just a general linux wish list. but who knows where it could go?

oh one more thing. my biggest complaint with gui config tools is that they dont tell you what you are editing as far as the file name and path
this just seems like it should be a commonsense feature

If you are using the GUI, the assumption is that you don't need to know what file you are editing. I like the warning at the top of my SuSE XF11Config "Do not Edit this file" :) Of course, I edited it. To the other part of the thread - you can probably find what you are looking for in one of the Distros already out there -- you just need to know what you are looking for...

what i mean is this. most people recommend redhat or mandrake for newbies to start because they have very nice graphical installs and config gui's and wizards.
my complaint with them tho is that they dont do things in the standard way.
they detract from your freedom.
my vision here is of a linux that is as easy to install and configure as windows but still completely open to the fullest manual control
beauty of mandrake, simplicity of slack i havent been able to find this yet.
Redhat and Mandrake use non standard or obsolete config files in some cases .
making them special cases for almost every install of anything

using redhat long enough to hate it, not really knowledgable enough for slack yet
