Two questions; one each about getting the SiS650 on-board video and SiS7012-driven Avance AC97 on-board sound on my laptop to work. All this is done in RH8.0 using the 2.4.20 kernel on a ProStar laptop.

Sound: I've read enough horror stories in this forum to know AC97 is not user-friendly. But, not only is the SiS7012 an option when recompiling the kernel, but I also have the driver offered by SiS. No matter what I do, it doesn't work, though. It lists in dmesg (correctly showing an IRQ of 10), and in lspci -vv (though this shows it having an IRQ of 0) but will NOT work. When running sndconfig, it says that the device is disabled and PnP OS should be turned OFF in the BIOS. Unfortunately I don't have an option for PnP OS in my bios (nor anything related to the embeded soundcard, for that matter). Any suggestions?

Video: After searching about the SiS650 video, I got the driver for it (from www.winischhofer.com). But... as I'm using RH8.0, my gcc is version 3 and the SiS650 driver was compiled using gcc version 2, and as I keep being told when trying to install it, "this is known not to work". So this is possibly a stupid question, but how do I get rid of gcc3 so I can recompile with gcc2? I tried removing the gcc package using the RH disk, and installed an rpm version of gcc2.95 I got, but my system is telling me the kernel I recompiled after that was compiled with gcc3. Of course, any other suggestion on how to get this to work without recompiling with gcc2 would be just as useful.

This is driving me absolutely insane (I've recompilied dozens in the past week so I can practically do it blindfolded), so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this is any help to you, but my first attempt at installing Linux (Mandrake 8.2) last week was a disaster as it did not support my SiS Video, nor the SiS onboard sound. Neither did it find my USB Cable Modem. The fact that it does not drive my Lexmark Z54se printer is relatively minor.

Yesterday I bought a magazine with CDs 1+2 of Mandrake 9.0 on the coverdisc, and, guess what? I have my monitor running in 1280x1024, picture on LCD monitor is stable, sound is, well, sounding, only the printer is still a problem.

This is probably due to the later drivers in 9.0, which you should find on the net somewhere, I suppose. As I have only been playing with Linux for 2-3 days now I don't know where you will have to find them, but I'm sure you can find out!

i know that in Mandrake 9 i had absolutely no problems getting my SiS 650 video and 7012 audio cards to work... they may have been set to horribly generic settings, but if they were, i either didn't notice the quality difference, or still was too much of a noobie to know from looking at the settings... since i've moved over to RH8, because in mandrake i was always feeling like everything was out of date, so i moved to RH8 and now it seems as if everything is TOO new!!

so good luck to the both of us
