i just got this brand new system with athlonxp 2000, but after i left it on for a day (first use), it then shuts down and won't power up. didn't smell any burning (so figured that the cpu should be fine), and i'm not why would the power supply might have been fried? so, can anyone suggest what kind of problem is this?

It could be any number of things. When you say dead do any fans spin when you push the power button? It could be the PS, motherboard or any component.

Did you build the system yourself or buy it prebuilt?
If prebuilt, return it for exchange or repair.

I'm thinking either the motherboard or power supply. You might want to take the power supply to a local PC shop and have them check it out. Or just take the whole system.
Make sure all of the cables are still connected and secure. If everything looks ok I would disconnect all of the power cables to your storage devices and remove any I/O cards. If it still doesn't power on you can also remove the memory and CPU. Then if you still can't get the fans to power on then it looks like its the motherboard.
What kind of hardware do you have? Are you sure the power supply rating is high enough for your system?
Good luck

Check on Asus website to see if there are any troubleshooting guides. You might try searching for Asus forums etc to see if any one else has had a similar problem.

I've just been down to Fry's Electronics - they have a small adapter for the ATX power supply that you can connect to test the power supply. At least it'll let you tie-break the power supply/mobo.
