alright here we go...
i have a crystal (PCI not onboard) sound card (model # in title)...it worked fine with windows XP but when i switched over to linux it just kinda conked on me...i dont see anything in HardDrake for a soundcard, and when i ran sndconfig it came up with

Model: Crystal Codec:GAME

(i imagine it was seeing the joystick port)
when it ran a test for sound it did not play.

anybody know how i can get linux to see and configure this card?

ok i accidentally put the serial # up too i think...CX4235 is the model....

the people in #mandrake on irc.efnet.net keep telling me to modprobe <soundcard module> but i dont know what module i should probe for....

(i have the old installation CD for the card for windows, is there a way i can harvest the the driver off of there?)

nevermind...did some probing myself and eventually used:

man sndconfig

(see it does pay to RTFM)

and i found that using 'sndconfig --noprobe' will let you pick out a card manually...
i chose CX423x Sound Chip and it ended it playing the sample right!!!!
