Been playin' around with stuff... I have RH8 installed, and default stuff is heavy. Slow loading (like kde). So, I been trying some stuff out. Pretty cool... You can get an awesome desktop that flies:
1. Change /etc/inittab to boot you into run level 3.
2. Get and install fluxbox. Read all the documentation on how to set it up well (on web site). It's light and fast! Tabs will speed up your desktop work, too.
3. Get gkrellm. Yeah, it looks neat, but it's also useful. You can have one-button push-access to mounting drive.
4. Gentoo file manager. Small and fast.
5. Gotta have aterm. Small, fast, transparency!
6. Sylpheed for mail. That program is awesome! Again: small, fast, light. And it's not short on features. Highly configureable. Just a kick-butt e-mail program.
That's a fast loading and light desktop. And it looks cool, too.

That is a real nice desktop. Im working on getting mine looking good and being functional. Where did you get the mount plugin for gkrellm?

From your icon by your name, I take it you're running Debian. You guys are insane. :-) I have heard nightmare after nightmare about installing Debian. I think, "No way." Congrats if you got it going!
I got a lot of ideas for the desktop from that 50-mile long thread about "Screenshots... just because." I think it's up to 62 pages or something like that.
I got all my gkrellm stuff from http://freshrpms.net/
It's a repository that works with apt-get.
1. I did an apt-cache search on gkrellm and then
2. I did an apt-get install on all the stuff that showed up that I wanted. One of the packs was gkrellm-plugins. Another one was skins. Dang... talk about overkill. Tons of skins.
Debian should be able to go out and get a bunch of that stuff for you, shouldn't it?
Other than my apt-get, I guess the other thing I'd suggest is http://web.wt.net/~billw/gkrellm/gkrellm.html
That's the home page and he has a section of plugins.
You know... wait a minute. Maybe I'm stoopid... I just thought to take another look at the thing. In configuration (right click the top of gkrellm) you should be able to click on Builtins (not plugins). There is a section in there called File Systems. That's where all the mount stuff is at. The info tab servers as a man page explaining how to set it up. I'm still figuring a lot of that little thing out, so I don't know if it's standard issue or something like you said - a plugin. Check it out.

I didnt think Debian was that hard to get going. It took a couple of tries but it works well when it's done. I was/am a super n00b. My only experience before I got to Debian was RH7.3 for about 3 days, 8.0 for about one day. Then came Debian.
I finally got everything working on my system after about two or three weeks of reading and testing stuff out. It feels good to have it almost perfect for me.
Heh, I guess I should have looked a little harder before I asked. Thanks
