I have an old laptop with no current OS on it, that I want to load Linux on. It is a 486/50 with 24MB, no NIC and a 1.0GB drive. It has no CDROM and only a floppy.

Your mission should you choose to except it......

1. What distribution of linux would you recommend for a system like this?

2. Can I load this flavor of linux onto floppy and load onto the system?

Any suggestions would really really help me....

Thanks

does it have a network card? If so (an you have another linux box), then you can install slack on it by using the boot disks, and mounting the install cd via NFS.

Unless you're a real Linux Guru, and since this is your first post here, I doubt that, this is not going to be a fun install, nor particularly usefull. Your hardware is, for lack of a better term, pitiful.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I would rather do that, than have you form a negative impression of Linux due to the problems of installing on such outdated, limited hardware.

You have to get a CDROM, even used, that connects through the PCMCIA slot. There are no distirbutions that can install off a floppy. The smallest is ~500 Mbytes, so you would nedd ~400 floppies, and each has to be sequentially prompted for by the install. It doesn't exist.

Thanks.

I have a PII notebook running Win2k dual booted with RH7.3, however, I had this old laptop laying around and wanted to see if I could make some use of it. I guess I'll have to find a PCMCIA NIC or something. Thanks.
