Yes, I'm sorry, it's yet another thread about sound card issues. If I load up X Windows (GNOME or KDE) as a normal user, I'm told that it can't access /dev/mixer. X Windows is very sluggish, and doesn't respond to my mouse clicks often. Also, in the terminal (tty1) I am getting constant '/dev/dsp: Permission denied' messages. If I start X Windows as root, I don't get any sound errors and it runs fine, but there is static crackle emitted from the speakers every half a second or so.
I'm running Slackware 8.1 with a VIA chipset onboard soundcard. I have setup the sound card outside of X Windows and it seems to work fine there when I send it audio files. I've also tried changing permissions as root using "chmod 660 /dev/dsp" and "chmod 660 /dev/mixer". They didn't throw up any errors, but they don't seem to have made any difference either. I (briefly) had Mandrake 9.0 running on my computer, and I had no problems with the sound then, so it should be possible to make it work.
Also, I'm using a NVIDIA Geforce 4 Ti4200 graphics card, and the NVIDIA drivers which work fine, but every time I start X Windows, my screen just flickers for about 10 seconds, before booting up. The log file indicates that it's running through lots of different default modes before finally deciding on one. Is there anyway I can cut this process out, and just give it the right one to begin with?
Thanks in advance,
Jeremy
