Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Java Ads
The Java Ads that are currently being shown on this network are really hurting some of us. For me, the forums have become incredibly slow. As some others have complained, it has caused their browser to crash. I know that some sites have their ads hosted by a third-party network and there is nothing that can be done about it. However, I don't know about this one... could the Java Ad please be removed if at all possible?
Here are some testimonials:

Thanks.

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but www.privoxy.org (which is based on
Junkbuster which I have used before) has a way to filter out all the add on a page. You might give that a try. When using Junkbuster's, and I used a downloaded premade list, pop-ups from those stupid sites was gone as well as most of the ads on pages since the software blocks connection to those sites.

I'm not really sure I want software to block ads. In fact, I can't have software to block ads. The place where I was at the time does not allow you to install software. Oh well... something I'l have to live with right?

Hmmm, you know what, I bet it could run from a floppy, or burnt to a cd. It isn't like it has to go in /usr/bin.

When I finally get to playing with it I am going to try that.

or you can disable java... the blacksun jre was an absolute resource hog for me so I don't use java anymore. I have realplayer and flash plugins installed, thats it. I have the file gzipped in the mozilla plugin folder in case I need java, but otherwise, it stays unused.

can I add my voice to the cause? they might not be too bad on a fast connection, but are a pain on dialup. what a waste of limited bandwidth! it looks as if everytime you return to a page, it dl's again

on windows, there is a c:\windows\hosts file or something like that. add the domain name of the offending ad and set it to 127.0.0.1 the ad will never load again.

actually it is under C:\windows\host for win95/98
if using nt format then look here:
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

linux also has the same file to use under /etc/host.
The Tech Guide (http://www.thetechguide.com) has a tut about it here (http://www.thetechguide.com/blockads.html) . it includes BSD's, BeOS, versions of Windows and Mac OS's. it even gives a list that can be added.
