If I put an audio CD into the drive, it plays just fine however I do not get any system or event sounds. The sound preferences show the server as enabled and event sounds are selected. If I go to Soundcard Detection and select play test sound, I do not hear anything

PS. All the controls in the volume setting look fine

Also try aumix (volumes/muting).

It could be a permission problem.

As root

chmod 660 /dev/dsp
chmod 660 /dev/audio

Also add the user to the audio group.

Are the soundcard drivers/modules loaded?

lsmod (list loaded modules)

You can actually try some of the suggestions in the other soundcard related threads as there have been many of them.

Eureka!

OK so this is an old thread but just for the record...

I discovered that my WebCam is getting installed as the primary audio device i.e. If I disconnect my webCam and restart my sound works.
