I screwed UP X ,is there any way to repair it without reinstalling linux?

How exactely did you screw it up? What happens if you want to start it? Deleted any files? If so, do you know which?

I did that too, my 'final solution' was to use the rpm manager to uninstall everything that began with xfree, and reinstall from my original red hat cd. I don't remember the commands offhand, but it was something like

rpm --force --uninstall XFree*

rpm -Uvh XFree*
