-sorry this may not be much help:

I was upgrading XFree86 on Mandrake 7.1 and got the same error on reboot - after struggling to get the thing back to the way it was and reinstalling a bunch of RPMs it finally rebooted with X working again - I got into the GUI but KDE was fried.

Finally I got p!$$ed off and just reinstalled. I usually have BeOS or a second Linux install so I can mount whatever partition I have toasted and rescue my files prior to reinstalling ... I guess I'm too well trained by Microsoft - got a problem/reinstall --I have never seen Linux just screw up by itself -only by my tinkering.

I have Mandrake 7.0 too

And it come up the same way , I was just screwing around with many RPMs and stuff like that (trying to get avifile to work...)

But I don't wanna reinstall Mandrake , because I have too many stuff already set-up there , and I don't wanna to set-up it all over again http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

I have had this same problem as well in Mandrake 7.2. Check you XF86Config file in the "fonts" section and make sure that "unix/:-1" is in there. I am not sure but this might solve it. Let me know if it does or not and i will see what else I can come up with.

Actually, with this error message I would make sure that line is NOT in there, or that it is commented out (put a # at the beginning of the line)
